Help with citations
[edit]Dear Amire80, I am taking the liberty of asking you to help me with the very final stage of completing the links between some of the citations in the published article about Tuvya Ruebner - a leading Israeli poet (Talk:Tuvya Ruebner). Looking at your CV I think you may be interested to help with doing justice to the memory of this remarkable Israeli poet. With help from a variety of people I have worked out an article that was accepted as 'published'. Yet, there is still a very small number of problems in that published version and, hard as I have tried, I have to accept now that I simply do not have the technical knowledge to overcome these problems. Indeed, I fear damaging this text if I tried. Having read your CV it seems to me that for you - these may be very standard problems that are not difficult to overcome. I hope you can find the time to help.
Here is what is involved:
The references in two of the sections ('Critical Acclaim' and 'References' sections) include problems that need to be put right. All seem to have been linked with an 'automated' routine - probably one of those Templates I cannot find how to alter.
Therefore, I have listed all the references in the References section. Then, within brackets, have typed into the References list and also the text of the Critical Acclaim section - explanations for the changes needed. Here is a list of these changes:
A. In the section called 'Critical Acclaim':
1. Line 3: The allocated link to Reference no. 5 which is 'Back, Rachel Tsvia 2014': this citation needs to be linked to 'Back, Rachel Tsviya 2020'. You will note the difference of the publication year. Please cancel the link of this text to Reference no. 5, and replace it with a link to Reference no. 7. This may mean deleting the Bram (2011) reference no. 7.
2. Line 4: Reference no. 7 (Bram 2011) should now be listed as Reference no. 8. Please amend accordingly.
3. The remaining references, i.e. nos. 9-12 are correct, but each still needs to be linked to its corresponding number in the text itself, as has been done for References nos. 1-6.
B. 'References' section: As done for problems in the 'Critical Acclaim' section, I typed in explanation for the changes still needed in the 'References' section - each within brackets.
C. Once all these adjustments have been done, please can you delete all my bracketed explanatory comments in the above two sections. Please let me know what further information I can provide. Yes, like you, it seems, I am also Israel born but I live in London UK. I would be very grateful for your help. 109.153.241.208 (talk) 21:43, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!
[edit]Respected Amir!
[edit]I'd like to republish the essay Wikipedia:The Free Encyclopedia in next Sunday's issue of The Signpost. OK with you? It's quite topical and - given the content - I suspect you won't mind it being republished.
Still, I usually like to ask before republishing someone's work.
Smallbones(smalltalk) 02:15, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- Sure, it's freely licensed ;)
- But since you're asking, a few questions and comments you may find interesting:
- I'm curious about the context in which it will appear.
- It's really cool that it was translated to a bunch of languages, and perhaps you can mention it in the story you're writing.
- While I wrote most of that essay, I don't claim to own it, in the spirit of WP:OWN.
- There's also Wikipedia:Free encyclopedia, which is kind of similar. I wonder whether they could ever be merged.
- I have this dream that the word "free" on the main page will link to this essay or something similar and not to the article "free content", as it does now, but it's not the most important thing in which I'm investing my time.
- Thanks for your interest! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:12, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- The context is given by the times we're in, not by me! There is an Enterprise API being proposed. I haven't mentioned that in my brief intro, but I think most readers will get that right away. There might be a couple links to the essay from other articles in the Signpost, e.g from a news story on the Enterprise API (some folks seem to want to say that we *cannot* sell our data to Google et al. Linking to the essay will be a good way of saying "not all Wikipedians agree with that POV")
- I probably should not add anything beyond the intro, though I might add "translated into 12 languages" into the intro.
- Thanks, Smallbones(smalltalk) 18:24, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Recovering Draft:Barbara Lavernos
[edit]Hello Amire80, I would please need your support in helping me recover the text of a deleted article Draft:Barbara Lavernos, which was deleted by TheChronium following a speedy deletion nomination by CommanderWaterford. While I am related to the subject of the article, something I have disclosed upfront, I believe the article is relevant as its subject is a notable business leader in the country. I would therefore like to to draft a revised version of the article - toning down the perceived promotional tone - and then ask an editor to proofread it before resubmission. Many thanks upfront for your support. Rammoza (talk) 21:58, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- Please stop asking every 5 minutes someone else for recovering this promo draft @Rammoza, you already did this at Anarchytes Talk Page and at the correct place. Please be patient, in the meantime I suggest reading carefully the information I left on your talk page. CommanderWaterford (talk) 22:00, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

CTT for Help pages and other namespaces
[edit]Hey there, Amire! :)
Is it possible to use Content Translation Tool for namespaces other than the main one? For example, it's been a while we want to translate Help:CS1 errors into Albanian but we progress very slowly and every time we check the original page, it has been updated and changed. CTT would speed up that process tremendously. If it is not, can we expect it to be in the near future? That's a much needed functionality. - Klein Muçi (talk) 07:38, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Klein Muçi, yes, it's possible! Just open the CX dashboard, start a new translation, choose English as the source language, and put "Help:CS1 errors" into the search box. I've just tested it and it works. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:34, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! :)) - Klein Muçi (talk) 00:46, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
- Amire, hello back! Today I noticed that CTT doesn't work on the modules and templates namespaces. I believe I do understand the rationale for that. The problem is that CTT would be very valuable in helping translate the documentation subpages of those pages and they can't be reached because of their location in those namespaces even though CTT is fully capable of doing that technically. Is there any way to make CTT work on /doc subpages as well? Small wikis would benefit immensely from that.
- At the moment being, around 90% of our templates and modules lack documentation and the only hope to understand what one serves for is to look at its homologue in EnWiki and if the user who imported it didn't connect it on Wikidata, you have to then hope for good luck in locating it in EnWiki.
- Building on the above idea, it would be ideal if we could have a suggestion show up on templates lacking documentation to use CTT to import and translate it. Even plain machine translation would be better than no documentation at all.
- I was thinking of proposing these changes on Phabricator but I thought I'd ask you personally before to get your opinion on it. - Klein Muçi (talk) 12:04, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hello again :)
- First, a tiny comment: We usually don't say "CTT" (nor "CT"), but "CX". See mw:CX/FAQ#What is CX? Why not "CT"? :)
- Now, about the suggestion. The general idea of allowing the translation of template documentation pages makes sense. However, allowing pages with particular suffixes will require some non-trivial development.
- I can personally suggest this is as a workaround: Copy the documentation page to a sub-page in the user space, and translate that subpage.
- (As a much more forward-looking idea, there should be a global shared templates repository, and then the template documentation can be made properly translatable as technical documentation should be, using the Translate extension's translatable pages feature. This is not happening any time soon, but it will hopefully happen Some Day.) Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 12:13, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, that is the Holy Grail, but as you, and almost everyone else, mention, that is a project that lives mostly on "Tomorrowland" so meanwhile we try for practical workarounds. I was thinking of doing exactly that but unfortunately that would be a solution that is unattainable by most of the community in small wikis, given that there is little initiative in covering documentation to begin with and it diminishes further with every extra step added.
- The suggested approach was to be able to eventually make place for that auto-suggestion in doc-lacking template/module pages which, seen from the eyes of a small wiki, would be able to "add the documentation subpage with the press of a button" (even though the translation would be machine-translation-level quality).
- I do understand the substantial development work that would be required for a change like that so meanwhile I'll try to follow the "side-approach" in the user namespace but I'd really hope that you take into consideration a functionality like that. Of course, a global shared repository of templates and modules would solve the doc problem and more simultaneously but if we could have aspects of that with CX faster, that would be welcomed. - Klein Muçi (talk) 14:23, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! :)) - Klein Muçi (talk) 00:46, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

[edit]CX - translation psychological aspect
[edit]Hello!
I wanted to discuss a subject thinking that maybe it hasn't been touched before.
CX is undoubtedly great at what it does however there is a small "problem", mostly from a psychological point of view. When you get the chosen paragraph translation it gets a bit "overwhelming" for the user to actually see syntactic errors in it. You can feel that the text doesn't flow as it should in your language but it's hard to exactly understand what's wrong. This is because most of the translations provided by CX are not really that wrong. Normally bigger syntactic errors, like the verbs in the end of the phrase being, are easier to be caught and corrected. But Google Translate has evolved pas those kinds of errors and now it's harder to catch and correct the remaining ones. The mind of an inexperienced translator gets easily overwhelmed by the semi-right syntax that is provided and they either leave all the sections like that or spend quite some time rereading and rereading the same small part of text until they overcome the mental-block and they're able to rethink (and therefore type) the same text in a more natural syntax. (This comes from observations during edit-a-thons.) This problem doesn't happen when the translation is done in a natural way. The syntactic flow is already there since, at most, the second rethink (once the user overcomes the urge to follow the syntax of the original language ad verbatim).
I was thinking that maybe some small interface changes may be able to mitigate this effect. Maybe the suggested text could be in a way that is not very obtrusive. Maybe more faded? :/ Maybe the tool, even though it already deals with small parts of text, could deal with even smaller parts of texts. I'm not really sure what to suggest as a solution because I'm not that informed in the phenomenon that I'm trying to describe as to suggest solutions. I hope I have been able to give a decent explanation though. The whole thing can be summarized pretty badly like this: It's generally easier for the mind to write than to edit. - Klein Muçi (talk) 14:29, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm quite well-aware of this problem, and you explain it well!

Greetings from a disgruntled Quoran
[edit]Greetings, Aaron.
I thought I would stop by to say hello, and see how you were doing. I have only been meaning to do this for the past five years or so, but finally stumbled on something organically via thoughtful Wikipedian, Nauseous Man, that led me here. (We are editing the BLP about a famous Korean-American Secret Service agent, and he is doing good work, um both the nauseous one and the agent.)
Quora is a sad relic of its former self.
I hope you and your loved ones are well in Eretz Yisrael. I wish I were there too. I have always wanted to greet you as Emir Aaron. Perhaps next year, in Jerusalem? <<imagine Pesach emoji whatever that might be, with a tear of sadness>> I want the world to return to normal, without COVID-19, so very much.--FeralOink (talk) 10:58, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
- My actual name is Amir, and not Emir or Aaron. Other than that, yeah, Quora used to be great, but it's not so great. I naïvely think that it may go back to being good, but I'm probably wrong. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 11:40, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Sq.JSON
[edit]Hey Amire! :)
I wanted your help and advice for something. Today I wanted to help improve some of the existing translations for Albanian in here. I started a change and just when I was adding the file to start working with it I checked its log page and saw that it has only been updated by Translation updater bot by importing from TranslateWiki. Now I'm not sure how to act: Can I still edit the page directly there or is that considered poor working method and outside of the usual workflow? If that's the case, how do I stop the change? Do I just press "Abandon" or do I need to write anything else in it? - Klein Muçi (talk) 02:59, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- I don't see that any files are changed. You should probably abandon it. sq.json should never be edited directly. Translate everything in translatewiki. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 06:00, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- Okay then. Thank you for the advice! :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 12:16, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
Content Translation Tool: trans-title parameter
[edit]Hey Amire! :)
I was fixing some citation errors in SqWiki and I noticed something. There are cases where the |trans-title parameter has values in English. This happens when the |title parameter has values in languages other than English. It's easy to understand what's happening: An EnWiki editor has cited something in a foreign language and has translated the title in English. Then a SqWiki editor has come, translated the article in Albanian, blindly copy-pasted the citations from the original article and call it a day. I know that the Content Translation Tool also imports the citations which is very good on its own but I was wondering, does it also deal with details like these? The |trans-title parameter serves to translate the title used in the citation but if the translated value is in the non-local language (Albanian in my case) its function is theoretically useless. - Klein Muçi (talk) 17:30, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
- No, unfortunately there's no such thing. I really wish there were, not only in Content Translation, but in templates in general. I imagine that it's totally feasible to have smarter metadata about template parameters. We now have TemplateData, where you can define the data type (string, number, boolean, etc.), and whether the parameter is necessary, but not much more than that. I think you could enhance it, with things like: should this be translated to other languages; if it's transferred, should it be copied as is or converted somehow (digit conversion, unit conversion, etc.). There can be more things.
- However, even though it's definitely feasible, it does require careful research and design. Also, it should probably be done after templates finally become global, or as part of making them global. If this becomes available before they are global, lots of local metadata will be written, and it will be yet another thing to copy to the global repository. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:34, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, that's part of what I was thinking when I was starting this thread. Then I thought that Content Translation already does part of that by substituting templates with their local homologues (if I'm not wrong) and maybe this was the one of the few oddballs that required a specific parameter's value to be substituted and, if they really were a few oddballs like I say, which I doubt to be honest, we could somehow "hardcode" these cases in it. But yes, what you propose is a way more elegant solution. - Klein Muçi (talk) 11:09, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

TranslateWiki: Ethics and ownership
[edit]Hello, Amir!
I believe a lot from our Albanian community are starting to have a problem in TranslateWiki which I've tried to ignore in the past but it's becoming a bit hard to continue doing so in the present. There is a user named Besnik b, which appears to be one of the main contributors in Albanian translations. Over the years, given that for a lot of time maybe he has been the only contributor, he has started to manifest a strong ownership of the messages he has translated and doesn't let anyone else do any changes to them. He is not active on any of the Albanian wiki projects themselves and some times his translations appear a bit superficial because they lack context. A year ago some members of my community tried to help translate the VE interface buttons and he reverted everything en-masse. Not only that but he's REALLY rude in the revert summaries he puts, for example, here, almost completely out of the blue (you'll see that it is the first ever interaction) he says in Albanian something on the lines of "Haven't you ever heard [his supposedly correct translation] or is that your village only uses [the other user's supposedly wrong translation]??" We thought about contacting him but we saw that he already had some past talk page messages about ethics from other users and he had been very arrogant in the answers he had provided there saying specifically (among other things) "I don't want and I won't let anyone to edit what I've contributed personally." Ever since, all of us have been a bit reluctant to participate in the entries he has worked on because we "fear" his retaliation, his lack of cooperation and the overall toxic environment that issues on these situations. The fact that all happens in Albanian is really frustrating because it's hard to show to other administrators what's going on and possibly find help. As I said, I've tried to postpone this situation for more than 1 year now but today we had an edit-a-thon about WikiGap and every day VE editing is getting used more than source editing in these cases so I had to go and do some changes in those entries. Now, maybe nothing happens, but keeping in mind not-so-past encounters, I strongly believe we'll have to go in edit-warring because of his ownership issues. I'm not sure what would be the best way to act in this case. - Klein Muçi (talk) 01:28, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
- I see that the activity in Albanian recently is not so big anyway, and the last discussion on his talk page was in 2016. I suggest that you do the fixes, and if anything goes bad again, bring it up at the Support page on translatewiki. The English Wikipedia is not the best place to discuss it :)
- To be sure that your changes are good, consider having discussions about it on other Albanian wikis or on https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Portal_talk:Sq , and get comments from other users. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 04:56, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Amire80, we do that. The Albanian community is not a large one and we are all connected either on wiki or on other channels like Telegram. The said user has never interacted with me personally (so far) but it was brought to my attention by other users complaining about him to me as an admin in SqWiki/SqQuote after he had reverted more than 100 entries without explanations and was offending our members in the ones that had summaries. We saw his talk page messages and its contributions and saw that these exact behaviors had been going on for a while now but given that they're in Albanian they aren't detected by the global community. (The summary I sent above with the link is really offending in Albanian and would be ground to immediate temporary bans in any of the Albanian wikis.) I'll try the support page as you suggested if anything happens but I'm afraid without context and local language knowledge this all will be treated like an usual edit-warring case. - Klein Muçi (talk) 14:03, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
В прошлый раз он просто написал: "This is my own conclusion".
Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:08, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
- Большое спасибо за подробный ответ! Через пару дней все оформлю как вы мне подсказали.--KoizumiBS (talk) 18:22, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
KoizumiBS (talk) 18:22, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

How to add today's featured articles/news on main page (home page)
[edit]Hello Amir!
How are "today's featured articles/news" added on main page of a Wikipedia without changing or touching the Wikipedia main page itself? I have seen on Chewa Wikipedia (ny.wikipedia.org) that featured articles and news change almost every two days,if not in a day, yet if you check the "main page history",it shows it was last edited in 2021 or few months ago.But its content change every day.
How do these articles change periodically? Where are they written? Is there some place where they are first written before showing up on main page?
Your quick response will be highly appreciated!
Thank you! Tumbuka Arch (talk) 13:16, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Tumbuka Arch, this requires manual maintenance. The simplest way is:
- Put the content of the featured article or news in a template.
- Include that template on the main page.
- Regularly update that template.
- I recommend talking to @Icem4k, who maintains the main page in Chewa.
- I also recommend talking to @Robertjamal12, who maintains the main page in Twi, a language of Ghana. It appears functional, nice, and simple to maintain. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:11, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you!
- Your first advice is easier though i have also
- asked the above mentioned and i am waiting for their feedback. Tumbuka Arch (talk) 17:39, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
TranslateWiki and images
[edit]Hello, Amir!
I was wondering something. TranslateWiki is set up to override local system messages in the MediaWiki namespace and this works fine for text only translations. What if the said system messages aren't just text locally but instead have other graphical elements, like images, html styling, font styling, etc.? I understand you can just recreate them and most likely TranslateWiki won't override it again unless someone changes the message again soon, which we can assume it's rare. But I wonder what discussions have ever been about this. If you have any knowledge to share, I'd appreciate it. - Klein Muçi (talk) 02:55, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Klein Muçi, sorry, I haven't noticed it earlier!
- Translations from translatewiki don't override local messages. It's the other way around: translatewiki is the default, and if there is a local override, then this is shown to the users. You should only override them locally if you have a very good reason. I also recommend, regularly going to Special:AllMessages in your wiki, selecting all the modified ones (E ndryshuar), going through the list, and doing the following:
- Delete the local versions of those that are identical to the translatewiki version. (Currently, there's one such message in the Albanian Wikipedia: sq:MediaWiki:Signupend. You should delete that page from the Albanian Wikipedia because that is an internal technical message that shouldn't be translated at all.)
- If the version in Wikipedia is better than the one in translatewiki, and it is good also for other sites and not just Wikipedia, update the version in translatewiki. (And after it's deployed to Wikipedia, delete it from Wikipedia.)
- If the version in Wikipedia is worse than the one in translatewiki, delete the one in Wikipedia.
- If there is a specific good reason to keep the version in Wikipedia different from the one in translatewiki, don't do anything. But do make sure that the reason is really good.
- Usually, you can add graphics to your locally-overridden messages, and they will be shown to users. If it doesn't work, please give me an example. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:12, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
Удаление информации из авторитетных источников
[edit]Здравствуйте! Можете, пожалуйста, обратить внимание на войну правок от участника Iampharzad: 1, 2, 3. Как обычно удаляют информацию из авторитетных источников. Причем единственное объяснение: "Your contents and resources are not correct". Ему уже писали о нарушении правил: 1, 2, 3, 4. Однако это на него никак не подействовало. В обсуждении все сводится к тому, что якобы "content of the source is non-indigenous and biased". Ну и плюс он меня пару раз обвинил в расизме: 1, 2. Ранее создавал заявку администраторам. Буду очень благодарен, если обратите внимание. KoizumiBS (talk) 21:41, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

GoogleTrans gadget
[edit]@Doncram and I were talking about an irritating problem, and he discovered that he'd somehow enabled the GoogleTrans gadget. Is that done automagically when you opt in to ContentTranslation? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
- Not that I know. Certainly not something made by the WMF Language team. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:29, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
- I think the only way that my user settings could have been changed, was from my selecting "Go to Special:ContentTranslation" at the Wikipedia:Content translation tool, following instructions there. That page is described as "This page in a nutshell: The Content translation tool is a beta feature that provides a framework for translating pages from one Wikipedia to another. Both the software and the community expectations for this tool are still under development." So it was exactly what Whatamidoing (WMF) suggested, that it was "done automagically when you opt in to ContentTranslation". The only other possibility is that the GoogleTrans gadget was enabled at some other point in the process as I proceeded to start a couple translations. I definitely did not knowingly enable the gadget, and I didn't (and pretty much still don't) understand what the GoogleTrans gadget is for, and how it could be brought up sensibly if it was enabled. --Doncram (talk) 18:53, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- Maybe this is relevant: I did myself use Google translation in my process, in the following way: since the ContentTranslation tool has auto-translation disabled for the English wikipedia (not sure if I am saying it right), what came up when I started to translate a page in the French wikipedia, was a side-by-side display showing the blocks of text in French on the left, and open blocks on the right where i was supposed to write my English language version. What i did was: in a completely separate Window I went to Google translation, and one or two paragraphs at a time, I pasted the French language material over to there, and it generated English language material, and I copy-pasted that to the side-by-side display page. And then I edited it further. --Doncram (talk) 19:14, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- Using translate.google.com in another window wouldn't have enabled the gadget on wiki. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:59, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- Another editor did a pretty thorough test and tells me that, as we believed, CX is not somehow enabling the gadget. Maybe you turned it on years ago? It conflicts with anything using VisualEditor (e.g., 2017 wikitext editor or the Reply tool with the toolbar enabled), so if you have been using the 2010 wikitext editor, you could have had it on for years without encountering this bug. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:33, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
- Using translate.google.com in another window wouldn't have enabled the gadget on wiki. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:59, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

Update to pagecounts on Toolforge
[edit]Hi! On Talk:Main Page#Wikipedia splash page English article count, someone pointed out that the article count for English Wikipedia on www.wikipedia.org is wrong by about an order of magnitude. This data gets pulled from the pagecounts tool, where you're listed as a maintainer, with the query
SELECT ss_total_pages, ss_good_articles FROM site_stats LIMIT 1
This assumes the table only has one row, which hasn't been consistently true since phab:T306589. Could you please update the query to instead be
SELECT SUM(ss_total_pages) AS ss_total_pages, SUM(ss_good_articles) as ss_good_articles FROM site_stats
(I've made a pull request that does this, but the version actually running on Toolforge is out of sync with what's on GitHub, so I figured it was worth reaching out to a maintainer directly).
Thanks! Vahurzpu (talk) 17:38, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, it's way beyond my capacity to help with this. Where an I listed as a maintainer of that tool? I am not really a maintainer. I only made a few trivial localization patches. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:55, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
- https://toolsadmin.wikimedia.org/tools/id/pagecounts; you should be able to remove yourself as a maintainer if you log in. I appreciate your taking a look; I'll contact one of the other listed people, hopefully getting an actual maintainer. Vahurzpu (talk) 20:29, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

[edit]Translating MediaWiki pages
[edit]Hi Amir,
I was wondering if you could show me where to go.
I wanted to correct the orthography on the MediaWiki pages on WP-inh. (They partially use the Latin alphabet rather than Ingush orthography.) The admin there said that the pages are not edit-protected. However, I am unable to edit them; evidently I need to edit them at translatewiki.net rather than locally on WP-inh. I've tried registering at translatewiki.net, but I cannot find the pages to (re)translate, and cannot even find a help page to ask how to get started.
Could you advise where to go from here?
Thanks, — kwami (talk) 23:42, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- Which pages exactly? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 04:57, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- inh:MediaWiki:Broken-file-category, inh:MediaWiki:Citethispage-content, inh:MediaWiki:Edittools, inh:MediaWiki:Licenses, inh:MediaWiki:Protect-dropdown, inh:MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext, inh:MediaWiki:Sitesubtitle, inh:MediaWiki:Uploadtext
- I posted the corrected versions on the talk pages. Mostly changing Latin 'I' to a proper palochka. The main page now says only the dedicated letter for palochka should be used, and pretty much everything but these pages have been switched over (not counting user and talk pages). — kwami (talk) 07:08, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Looks like this has to be done both locally in the "MediaWiki:" namespace on inh.wikipedia by someone who has permissions to edit in the MediaWiki space (usually sysops or interface editors), and on the corresponding pages on translatewiki, such as https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Broken-file-category/inh (on this page on translatewiki it's already done).
- If a local page exists on the Ingush Wikipedia, that's the one that will be used there, but for universal usefulness, it should also be fixed on translatewiki.
- Does it make sense? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 07:32, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, thanks. I can try to do the one on translatewiki if the Inh admin does the local pages. — kwami (talk) 07:37, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Actually, MediaWiki:Broken-file-category isn't even close to matching. Maybe Adam-Yourist can do both. — kwami (talk) 07:41, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- I guess that on the Ingush Wikipedia, they wanted to have a clever system that makes separate categories for different namespaces, while the message in core MediaWiki on translatewiki gives one category name for everyone. The whole clever structure shouldn't be copied to translatewiki—there, it should be kept simple and consistent with other languages. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 07:44, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- It appears I'm not allowed to make any edits, and I have to make test edits to get permission to make edits. Without some direction on how to break the circle, someone else will have to do everything. — kwami (talk) 07:43, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- I've just given you the permission to post translations on translatewiki. With your involvement with various languages for so many years, I'm surprised that you didn't have an account there :) Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 07:45, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks!
- Well, I probably can't speak any language well enough to translate that hasn't already been translated in full. I can only operate in Ingush because I've limited myself to clerical tasks. — kwami (talk) 07:49, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Clerical technical tasks coördinated with native speakers are a good thing to do :) Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:03, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Kwamikagami, just to clarify: translatewiki is only for things that are for all wikis. Pages that are supposed to be local by their nature, like tagline ("The Free Encyclopedia"), or upload policy with local wiki characteristics are not supposed to be edited there. The translations there are supposed to be translations of the English text. So I had to revert or deleted some of your translations there. Thanks for understanding :) Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:43, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- No problem! I was just trying to follow the instructions on WP-inh that changes there had to be duplicated on translatewiki. I thought at first that I needed to edit there instead of at WP-inh, that perhaps the MediaWiki pages were transcluded from translatewiki. — kwami (talk) 08:54, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, most of them should be duplicated, except those that are intentionally localized. Translations are not transcluded from translatewiki; they are periodically copied from translatewiki into Gerrit, and subsequently deployed.
- Also, if the text on the local wiki is identical to the text on translatewiki, the corresponding local wiki page in the MediaWiki space can usually be deleted. Note, however, that the changes from translatewiki are usually deployed to the local wiki only on the Thursday of the following week. You can check this on the Special:AllMessages page. I made a personal user script that checks for such identical messages: :meta:User:Amire80/allMessages.js on that page. Feel free to copy it (and if you're into such things, convert it to something more easily reusable). Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:03, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- So this is basically like Wikidata, but for the bones of the wiki. Makes sense. — kwami (talk) 09:16, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Kind of, but less instant, because it's deployed once a week. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:19, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

- The news piece from JTA is nice, but not so important for Wikipedia's needs. The fact that his description on the Nobel Prize site and plenty of other sites describe him as Jewish is much more important. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 04:58, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
survey of Wikipedia users, help for translation
[edit]Dear @Amire80, I contact you because I've seen that you helped for the translation of the WMF's 2019 survey. We are planing to conduct a survey of different Wikipedia language's users: The page on the WMF Research project space is here And the announce in the en-wikipedia here
If you had time (and will!) to help us translate the survey for the he-wikipedia or the ru-wikipedia that would be great!
best,
Jullienn (talk) 16:05, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- On one hand, I love localization, and I'd love to increase my community's participation in useful surveys by translating it.
- On the other hand, there are lots of research projects, they come and go, my time is limited, and localizing Wikipedia's own user interface into my language is a higher priority for me. Translating surveys, from experience, can be particularly time-consuming.
- So I'd love to hear the WMF's opinion about it before I invest time in it. Thanks for understanding. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:59, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

Restoring a deleted page entitled "مسعود شفیعی"
[edit]Dear Amire80 Recently a page was created for professor Masoud Shafiee whom is a famous teacher at AmirKabir university in Iran. You can find his page on university website here. You can also find his page on google scholar here. He has authored lots of scientific books and papers and is well-known in the scientific community. In regard to his works at different universities in Iran and as he is well-known in Iran, a page was created for him on Wikipedia. But a guy has deleted the page after less than a day from creation (without any reason). As he is one of the most famous professors in electrical engineering in Iran and was the dean in university of Applied Sciences and Technology (named here), the Wikipedia page was created for him to help users find his information on the internet. The page was for his students and other people to know him better and find information about him. As the page is deleted (here), I would be grateful if you could restore it. Thank you in advance. Antisemitism
[edit]I want to state that in the last few hours I have received possible attacks from a user User:Allan Nonymous who until now has a long list of articles from Israel to delete without specific reasons
The articles about Israel proposed by the user to delete are: Israel–Hamas war in Israeli music, Maor Ashkenazi, Noam's Song 2, and Noam Bettan (where it does not recognize the musical notoriety of the artist and previously added a template to delete)
All these examples raise the alarm of a possible Anti-Israel subject and possible Antisemitism at first I thought it was a persecution of me and my contributions that I make so that the user stops monitoring my articles and contributions and not having more bullfighting with that guy
help.--Acartonadooopo (talk) 19:00, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- How can I help? What exactly is the question?
- As a general comment, on Wikipedia, it's not so useful to accuse other users of prejudice without very clear evidence. There are few things that I love more than Israeli music, but nominating several articles about Israeli music for deletion is not, by itself, evidence of antisemitism. It's much more useful to find specific violations of written policy and complain about them. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:36, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
[edit]Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
