Can somebody try and put this in some sort of context? Is this a term that economists use, or is it a specific government's policy, or one party's policy or what? --Camembert 18:03 Nov 10, 2002 (UTC)
- It is part of the ideas of Henry George, the American journalist/economist/politician of the late nineteenth century who saw land value taxation as a more sensible answer to many of the economic problems caused by Laissez-faire capitalism, than wholesale revolution. George's ideas were very influential at that time and found their way onto the political platforms of quite a few parties, including the British Labour and Liberal parties of the day. I believe that the confrontation between the House of Lords and the House of Commons in the 1900s at the end of which the Lords lost the power to veto taxation changes, was caused by an attempt by the Liberal government to implement LVT in Britain. Today Georgists are still pointing out the merits of his ideas to anyone who will listen. -- Derek Ross 19:13 Nov 10, 2002 (UTC)
