Regarding esoteric terminology in the lead

[edit]

With all due respect, the following sentence -replete with it's tongue-tying, over-technical, statistical jargon- has absolutely no place in the lead paragraph of this article.

Litchfield County comprises the Torrington, CT Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the New York-Newark, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area.

Please understand that I am not contesting the factual accuracy of the claim. Instead, I am suggesting that the excessively technical nature of the claim means that this particular fact is of esoteric import and not a broadly valuable enough fact to warrant inclusion in the lead.

Any mention of terms as bewildering and unintuitive as "Torrington, CT Micropolitan Statistical Area" and "New York-Newark, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area" belongs in a more specialized section of the article, not in the first dozen sentences where readers are supposed to be able to access a "clear, accessible" (WP:LEAD) overview of the topic at hand.

I recognize, however, that lead paragraph edits can sometimes tend to be contentious, so I'm trying to open the stage for some discussion on this before taking action. —Jgcoleman (talk) 14:12, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
