Dear Sir/ Madam I am a student of South Bank University who makes regular use of your Wikipedia web site, as it is a very reliable source of information. However I was very surprised when I went on to the site relating to ‘Oona King’ the Labour party candidate for the 2005 general election in the constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow. I found there to be much misinformation in what is relatively a very small article. The article also seems to instigate religious and racial hatred to some extent because of the provocative manner it was written in. it is common belief that big organisation such as Wikipedia must keep some form of objectivity even though at times it can be difficult.
The article states that Oona King was attacked by “ Islamic Fundamentalist who slashed the tyres on her car, pelted her with eggs and vegetables and made threats to kill.” This is untrue, as Islamic fundamentalist had nothing to do with this according to most reliable news sources who have attributed this act to anti- war demonstrators who were angry with Ms King support of the war. In fact, surprisingly there was no complaint made of such as case to the police according to investigation carried out by other organisation into Ms King ordeal. On the contrary, it was George Galloway who was attacked by Islamic Fundamentalist and as a result police got involved. This might be something you would like to correct in you article.
The Article, bearing in mind the previous point on the Islamic Fundamentalist, trys to give the impression that Ms King was denied her democratic right in campaigning in the general election in a Muslim majority constituency because she was Jewish. However, this is completely false because she was elected in the same constituency on two other elections. Some of the provocative extracts were used in your article it seem deliberately to give that kind picture to the public. For example:
“That, and the fact her former seat has a large Muslim population,”
Oona King “Born in 1967 to a Jewish mother (Hazel)”
“For me, racism is not an academic point. My father is black and my mother is Jewish”
“…she, as a Jew, was responsible for the death of their Lord...”
“Extremism breeds extremism.”
In reality, religion and race had nothing to do with the campaign in this area because there is a large ethnic minority group in Bethnal Green and Bow and Oona king belonged to an ethnic minority group herself. She was elected on two other occasions but she lost her seat this time to a person who was white and non-Muslim. This simply shows that the out come and events surrounding the campaign was due to the values each candidates held and not because of the colour of their skin or their religion.
Please could you kindly review these points in your article and correct the mistakes as appropriate
Thank you for your time.
