Racist categories?

[edit]

Is there any knwon reason why we need categories for people by ethnicity or sexual orientation? Is wikipedia a project of racists? Should we cover left- and right-handed people as well or people according to their preferred sexual practices or shower lotions? As I asked at Talk:George W. Bush, how much sense makes a category that would cover several thousand entries? Should we start categories for caucasian people as well, indians, asians, blacks? Should Tiger Woods be listed in all of them because he labels himself caublinasian? Get-back-world-respect 23:21, 30 Jun 2004 (UTC)

It's no more racist to list people by ethnicity than it is xenophobic or nationalistic to list people by nationality. It's worth noting that the people most interested in knowing who's in a given ethnic group are members of said ethnic group - how is anti-Semitic for a Jew to compile a thorough list of notable Jews?
As far as I know, Tiger Woods would be listed under all three categories. -Sean Curtin 05:46, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)
As a left handed person, I think it would be interesting to create such a category. Of course, it would be silly to create a category for right handed people. --ssd 12:56, 11 Jul 2004 (UTC)
If there were any chance to keep those categories even close to comprehensive they would include several thousand entries. Regarding sexual orientation I regard that as as absurd as listing preference for hair colour of the partner. Get-back-world-respect 22:46, 11 Jul 2004 (UTC)

What exactly is a "categorization project"?

[edit]

I don't really understand the subject of this page. Is this a ordered, smaller list of all the catagories, which leaves out those that are deep leaf catagories, like Category:British_ASW_aircraft_1950-1959, or is it something else? Something I would personally find really useful was a guide to the general outline of the catagory system currently in Wikipedia, so I could begin to have an intuition about where to look to begin catagorizing an article; is that what this page is for? Right now, it appears to list just various catagories, but without much rhyme or reason, AFAICS... Any explanation would be appreciated. JesseW 10:54, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Major cleanup

[edit]

About 90% of articles are now categorized, and most of the categories mentioned as "projects" are now well-populated. The remaining tasks are mostly "mop-up" operations, such as finding articles that have been left behind, improving the organization of the category network, writing intros, enforcing standards, etc. I've listed coordination points for these tasks, which should steer people in the right place. If you have another coordination point to add, or a content-specific project that's not mentioned or which I thoughtlessly erased, feel free to add it. -- Beland 04:43, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Current?

[edit]

I thought that a page being current is not a notable point; it's the norm. Why do we need the "(current)" in the title (Wikipedia:Categorization projects was created just now and is a redirect to here)? Brian Jason Drake 11:27, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Uncategorized pages project?

[edit]

So far I haven't found a page where there is a project specifically dedicated towards categorizing uncategorized pages. If there is one I'd like to know where the info is. If it doesn't exist, then I propose there should be one. If there was some organization towards clearing that up, I'm sure the wiki would be improved. --Eeee 05:39, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Try User:Bluemoose/Uncategorised_good_articles (copied to Eeee's talk page as well). Carcharoth 07:51, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

uncat Robot?

[edit]

Is it valuable to add the uncategorized template to articles that don't have at least one category? If so, I would like to write a robot which will do so. How do I seek approval for this project, or work to make sure I'm not duplicating (or subverting!) someone else's effort? -- Mikeblas 17:32, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
