Pope Peter VII of Alexandria → Peter VII of Alexandria

Oppose (see below). Neutral, pending further discussion. Peter VII of Alexandria is currently a disambiguation page; would Patriarch Peter VII of Alexandria be left where he is? Having "Pope" and "Patriarch" in the article title has the advantage of making it immediately apparent which church we're talking about (for instance, Category:Patriarchs of Alexandria doesn't discriminate between them, and it's not immediately apparent which belongs where). Moving the Coptic Pope to Peter VII of Alexandria could give the impression of awarding him precedence over the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, which sounds like a violation of the NPOV policy. Do we need a different form of disambiguation, such as Peter VII of Alexandria (Coptic Orthodox), Peter VII of Alexandria (Eastern Orthodox), and (conceivably) Peter VII of Alexandria (Eastern Rite)? –Hajor 13:59, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I have to concur with Hajor. But maybe putting it in the suggested format Hajor relayed wouldn't be a bad idea for the Popes of the Orthodox churches (Coptic and Greek) after Dioscorus I, Patriarch of Alexandria as he is the last patriarch both religions agree upon and would create the appropriate conformity of Patriarchs of Alexandria without titles already (i.e. Mark the Evangelist; Abraham the Syrian; Gregory of Cappadocia. As for the Eastern Rite church, their patriarch is an archbishop under the authority of Rome and therefore is in charge of a diocese rather than a religion and can't be called a pope. -Markio 16:25, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The form with "Pope" follows the naming convention given at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles)#Clerical names. If you think the convention is wrong, you should argue for it to be changed at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (names and titles). Gdr 20:05, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)

Thank you for pointing that out; I must have read that convention at some point and subsequenty forgotten about it. It's clear, established, and avoids the ugly "(parenthetical disambiguations)" I described above. It makes it immediately apparent which tradition a given patriarch/pope belongs to; the pre-Chalcedon ones are all at Mark II of Alexandria, etc., without the prefixed flag, which is a useful way of indicating they belong to both (all 3) churches prior to the schism. I'm new here (been a long time lurker in the shadows though), but I just read more about the naming conventions and looked more carefully at the sights including many of the saints. Therefore, I'm going to have to agree with Hajor again. It should remain as Pope Peter VII of Alexandria.
