Pronunciation of "Groening"
[edit]Another pronunciation problem: (name rhymes with "complaining", SAMPA ['grEniN]) -- these don't match! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tarquin (talk • contribs) 20:11, 29 October 2002
name rhymes with "raining" would work better. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.103.59.23 (talk • contribs) 21:35, 16 August 2003
- I've modified the pronunciation guide to actually rhyme with raining (it previously would have been something like "grenneeng") and also converted to IPA which is after all the recommended standard for Wiikipedia. rossb 16:20, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Where's the IPA? Did someone delete it? Theshibboleth 02:33, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I think I saw Groening appear in one Simpsons episode and he actually says his own name, and it did not rhyme with 'raining'. Typically I can't remember the episode details to back that up, so feel free to remove this comment if you think I'm talking out of my ass. I'll try and keep an eye out for it (the episode, not my ass).(user: can't remember my login details either) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.109.139.37 (talk • contribs) 18:44, 3 May 2007
Found this: The Technology Chronicles: "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening at TED (2007) > (Listen/Download Audio link) Groening tells interviewer how to pronounce his name, near start of interview, less than a half minute into it. Hope this helps but wasn't sure if it was okay to add as a ref link. Will leave that to someone else. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.53.58.159 (talk) 05:49, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

- I very highly doubt it. -Kaizersoze 22:41, Jan 28, 2005 (UTC)
- It could be his brother Mark Groening, as he's a Vietnam veteran. -Kaizersoze 23:34, Feb 13, 2005 (UTC)
I think GRAY-ning isn´t correct because the name has a German and a Dutch origin. Matt Groening himself said this in an interview with www.spielfilm.de:
Spielfilm.de: Mr. Groening, stimmt es eigentlich, dass Sie deutsche Wurzeln haben? Translation: Mr. Groening, is it right that you have German ancestors?
Matt Groening: Mein Name ist deutscher und holländischer Herkunft. My name has a German and a dutch origin.
So the pronunciation must be "Gröning" or something like this. I only want to say this because it sounds so badly for German ears ;-). That needn´t be in the articel.
Sry for my bad English, I´m from the German Wiki. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.15.214.75 (talk) 20:10, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

- If you listen to any of the DVD commentaries, you will hear him pronounce it GRAY-ning himself. -- Scorpion0422 20:13, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- It's fairly common for names originating from other parts of the world to be mispronounced—and misspelled—with respect to the origin in the U.S. I know of dozens of family names which were messed up single-handedly by immigration officials. For example, Schneider—when not directly translated to Tailor or Taylor—is often changed to Snyder or Snider. Another I know is pronounced different ways by different branches of the same family in the Northwestern U.S. —EncMstr (talk) 20:38, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
There's a bigger issue here. We're talking about how he says it way too much. It's not the way he says it, it's how it was given to him. This looks like another case of the I don't like my name fiascoes. You know like the vice principal who says his name lao-wer when it's spelled l-o-w-e-r, just to save face with the kids. No one chooses their own name, or their children's last name, period. And if my kid tries to pull that kind of deceit, well let's just say he won't be doing that again anytime soon. If it's spelled like groening, then it sounds like groening, 't's that simple. Heterochromiac (talk) 00:24, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
- Right, but you see, we have to work with policies. One of these policies is No original research. Another is reliable sources. Another is that everything moved be verified. If Groening says it is pronounced Graying, then that's how it is pronounced. End of discussion. Gran2 08:56, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Family names
[edit]Could we get a cite on the anecdote that Groening didn't name Abraham Simpson after his own grandfather? It seems unlikely that after naming six other characters after family members he would suddenly balk at naming one more. It also seems a little suspect that other people supposedly chose an uncommon name like Abraham in a random coincidence. MK2 05:22, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- He himself mentioned it on one of the episode commentaries on The Simpsons DVDs. I believe the name was chosen as an homage to Abraham Lincoln. --Kaizersoze 17:51, Apr 1, 2005 (UTC)
- In the Early Life section it says his grandfather's name was Abram, not Abraham. The cited link says his grandfather's full name was Abram Abraham "A.A." Groening, and that his great-grandfather's name was Abraham. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.107.0.106 (talk) 19:22, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

- Groening's son is named Homer too. He did this to make up for naming the big buffoon after his father. (Interview in Season 2 DVD) --Fizan 03:22, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
"Groening also has an older brother and sister, Mark and Patty, but their names were not used."
Patty was used as the name of one of Marge's sisters (Patty & Selma). I'll change it.
SteveRamone 05:09, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- According to the source we use, Groening says"Now, as I've said in countless interviews, Lisa, Maggie, Marge and Homer are all named after members of my family. But I also have another sister Patty and a brother Mark, who I haven't humiliated by naming characters after them." So I assume that means that Patty was named by someone else, and is just a coincidence. -- Scorpion0422 05:14, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, my mistake. Seems odd though.
SteveRamone 05:17, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Life Is Hell
[edit]Groening also had a series of cartoon books based on a stip he did called either Life in Hell or Life Is Hell. The books had titles like "School Is Hell". Anyone know more about the strip? He drew a one-eared bunny and had two gay characters, Akbar and Jeff, if I recall. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.138.168.163 (talk • contribs) 19:59, 28 July 2005
Yup, Life in Hell. Bunch of books, Love is Hell, Work is Hell, School is Hell, Childhood is Hell, Big Book of Hell, Huge Book of Hell, a few others, all really funny stuff. It was about the bunny protagonist Binky, his one-eared son Bongo, and his girlfriend Sheba, as well as the relationship and entrepreneurial adventures of Akbar and Jeff.--STLEric 08:01, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Akbar????
[edit]Wikipedia:List_of_encyclopedia_topics/Biographies_G2 (section 14, number 41) lists him as having the middle name akbar, and so does this webpage, is this right? Martin - The non-blue non-moose 10:07, 7 September 2005 (UTC)
- Seems unlikely. Probably, someone down the line got it mixed up with Akbar and Jeff. RMoloney (talk) 16:03, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
Groening is in fact still dating writer Lauren Francis (she has collaborated on a book with Groening and appeared as an advice columnist on a syndicated television show; I'm not certain she's chosen to pursue a singing career), who has said with certainty that Groening's completely straight. Perhaps the misunderstanding about Groening's orientation has arisen simply because he was tolerant and empathetic enough to have written a strip for the Village Voice ("Life in Hell") that often featured two identical gay characters named Akbar and Jeff. It wouldn't surprise me if the artist's middle name really were Akbar, or if he did identify with the two gay characters, since they seem to symbolize self-love. That emotion seems particularly hard-won for Groening, who, purportedly, was not always treated well by his father. Besides, Groening isn't the first person to have written movingly about people of other genders, races, religions and sexual orientations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.175.63.135 (talk • contribs) 13:00, 14 February 2006

Groening and Bodybuilding?
[edit]Jacky Wong is a bodybuilder from Hongkong, who operates two sports studios in Heidelberg, Germany. On the german Wikipedia-Page of Jacky Wong, it is mentioned that he and Matt Greoning are close friends, that he was a long time personal trainer of Greoning and that Greoning desgined the character of "Amy Wong" for him. I haven't fround any evidence for these claims on other webpages, especially not on the english Wikipedia. - When describing wealth, "millionaire" used to describe the circa-top-2% of wealthy people. Then "multimillionaire." Now it goes by large amounts. The $150 Million benchmark for entertainers was most likely before the $25 Million "gold standard" set by Mike Myers. In 2008 it is about $250 million and will probably be a billion by 2025. "Filthy stinking rich" just doesn't describe it any longer, though as regards Mr. Groening's net worth, I'd suggest that to be pretty accurate..74.13.33.29 (talk) 04:13, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

- This fact should actually be eligible for the entry. Groening talks about it in this video interview, go to time mark 8:08: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX4L1DGtdKU
- There probably won't be any articles on "The Story," though: I tried a Google search using the title, his name, and distributor ACI Films (or ACI Pictures) for reaffirmation; nothing came up. ElMeroEse (talk) 07:41, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

Reuben Award - 2002 or 2003?
[edit]The year Groening received the Reuben Award is not consistent between this article, the National Cartoonists Society article and the official Reuben Awards site.
Both the official Reuben Award site and the National Cartoonists Society article state that Groening received the award in 2002, where the Matt Groening article states 2003.
Is there a reason why this article states 2003, or is it, as I suspect, a mistake?
AaronRC 11:09, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
I guess it was a mix-up, this page says "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening receives the Reuben Award, San Francisco, 2003, so he received the award in 2003 for 2002. --Rubber cat 21:56, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
website??
[edit]You know, I was curious about the fact that it seemed to always be under construction so I decided to research it. Unless the very first release in 2000 was diferent, it has been "under construction" ever sense it started in 2000. I checked it on Archive.org, here is the link to it if you want to see for yourself [1]. I just figured that it is somewhat notable due to the fact that it has not just been under construction for a long time, but rather sense its inception. (unless those first two ones <which are missing> were actually diferent). --MJHankel 22:39, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Groening's style
[edit]Given that he is a cartoonist by trade, there should be some mention of his style. i.e. the "Simpsonized" form - you can look at a drawing of any celebrity without context, and know that they were a character in The Simpsons. --Jay(Talk) 18:43, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Pronunciation again
[edit]If his family is Dutch, as the Mennonite background seems to suggest, then Groening should probably be pronounced [gruniŋ] ("grooning"), at least in modern Standard Dutch (where the digraph oe stands for IPA [u]). - Actually, a lot of Mennonites are German too. And Groening himself pronounces it Greyning. -- Scorpion0422 01:24, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I think this [3] settles the issue: "AMSTERDAM -- (..) On Tuesday, Groening unveiled 10 minutes of footage from "The Simpsons Movie" to European exhibitors at the gathering, which runs through Thursday. Groening added he had Dutch ancestry and had discovered only that afternoon that "I have mispronounced my own last name my whole life.". Should it be added to the article?KelilanK (talk) 02:36, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- The "Dutch" in Mennonite Dutch is from "Deutsch" (German). This common mistake irritates us Dutch people to no end, regardless of any Dutch ancestry Mr. Groening has, to his immense genealogical credit. Plus, in Dutch the "roe" is pronounced with a sound unpronounceable by any person not raised as a natural Dutch speaker. The infamous "throat clearing" sound.74.13.33.29 (talk) 04:23, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, the old German "oe" has now been replaced by "ö" in many instances, so in a German-speaking country his name might be spelled "Gröning". IPA [ø] (Close-mid front rounded vowel, where the closest example in English would be in "bird", as pronounced in New Zealand), like the previous chancellor of Germany Gerhard Schröder, whose family name was previously spelled Schroeder. In French the same vowel sound is spelled "eu", or simply the letter "e" ; examples : heureux (happy), cheval (horse), bleu (blue). --Jerome Potts (talk) 11:56, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

- Groening himself has said he's currently agnostic. However, I think he grew up as a Unitarian. -- Scorpion0422 01:42, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
- But being an agnostic is not the same as not being a UU. It is quite possible to be both. Carolynparrishfan (talk) 23:00, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Political stance
[edit]I am a little surprise that there is no mention of Matt's political stances. On many of the DVD commentaries, Matt has said he left leaning and liberal (even saying in the commentary for The Cartridge Family he described himself as "left wing anti-gun" and wanted the episode to have a message that guns are bad). In the commentary for The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular, they also said most (but not all) of the writers were liberal. TJ Spyke 12:54, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

- Yes, he was very heavily influenced by R&B — the middle initials for Homer and Bart are both J, just like Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose, all of them tributes to Jay Ward. Matt Groening religion
[edit]Does his religion really belong in the infobox? sixtynine • spill it • 00:24, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- If Mr.Groening has considered it important enough to share this information, then why not list it in the infobox?COGITO ERGO SUM (talk) 23:09, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Because it's extremely inconsistent. The infobox summaries generally contain the same basic info for everyone, with a few misc things that may be relevant to their profession/reason for being famous. Groening's career has no relation to his religion and other cartoonists and TV show producers do not have similar information in their boxes. This immediately jumped out at me as being very weird. --173.53.217.212 (talk) 01:52, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
- Agree, it looks wrong (gossipy, tabloid, fan club, etc.). I suppose an Infobox Philosopher or an Infobox Theologian could include such a parm, but other than that kind, i think no. I mean, while we're at it, why not height, weight, favorite brand of <you name it>, breast cup size of women who are neither models or porn stars, just because they might've have revealed it once somewhere ? --Jerome Potts (talk) 12:11, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Mennonite writer
[edit]This article has been added to the category Mennonite Writers. This seems wrong on 2 counts: 1) is a cartoonist a writer? and 2) the subject is seemingly an agnostic, and there is no evidence that even his father (his only connection with the Mennonite faith) continued practicing it in adult life. Can we get rid of this? DJ Clayworth (talk) 19:23, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
- Going, going...gone. DJ Clayworth (talk) 17:25, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
- I also removed the category underground cartoonist because I saw no indication that he ever was one. If we are talking about the time he sold his cartoons in the corner of a store, that doesn't make him an underground cartoonist it amkes him a struggling cartoonist or an unpublished cartoonist. German American father - born and raised in Canada
[edit]I don't think referring to his father Homer as "German American" is an appropriate description when he was born and raised in Canada. Furthermore, being raised Mennonite is not the same as being of German heritage. Occupation
[edit]I've attempted to trim the list of occupations listed in the opening sentence and the infobox to only those things that the subject has done routinely and is known for, removing items he has done only incidentally in connection with those occupations, or as a hobby. For example, he has never been involved in the production work of animating the programs he is involved in, his voice acting bits are less than many Simpson's "celebrity guest stars", he's only a "comedian" in the broad sense that he writes humor, and the band he sometimes plays with are a hobby/celebrity-fundraising project rather than a professional pursuit. Groening is not known for these things, and cluttering up the opening with them not only gets in the way of what he is actually known for, it's misleading because of the undue weight it gives to trivial items on his IMDB page. -Jason A. grammar error?
[edit]In the personal life section it reads, "Groening was mentioned in a lawsuit by Virginia Giuffre over allegedly being forced by sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein to massage his Groening's feet"
Shouldn't it be, "Groening was mentioned in a lawsuit by Virginia Giuffre over allegedly being forced by sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein to massage his feet" or "Groening was mentioned in a lawsuit by Virginia Giuffre over allegedly being forced by sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein to massage Groening's feet"?

Groening and Deborah Caplan married in 1986[27] and had two sons together, Homer (who goes by Will) and Abe,[44] both of whom Groening occasionally portrays as rabbits in Life in Hell. The couple divorced in 1999. They met at the alternative newsweekly, The LA Reader, in 1982. At the time Deborah was the advertising manager while Matt drew the popular weekly cartoon strip, Life in Hell. Deborah saw Matt’s u recognized brilliance and wanted to promote him to a wider audience. She left The Reader to start Life in Hell Cartoon Co. and Acme Features Syndicate, developing Matt’s cartoons into a line of quirky novelty items including notecards, mugs, t-shirts, and posters and selling them through mail order ads in the 250 free weeklies that now carried his cartoon, in novelty shops and at the San Diego Comic-on. In 1984, the now couple self-published Love Is Hell, a compilation of his cartoons, and in 1986, after marrying, Work Is Hell. Both book rights were soon sold to RandomHouse for a wider distribution. As Matt’s business partner and manager Deborah produced book signing events and art exhibits of his original art in galleries and comic book stores on then-super hip Melrose Avenue. The business closed in 1989 when Matt began his career in television with the TV show, The Simpsons. 47.154.207.107 (talk) 23:33, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

What comic book is Matt Groenings first appearance in comic books?
[edit]Just wondering if anyone knows. What traditional sized comic book is Matt Groenings first appearance in comic books?
It is well known that the comic "What The--?! #10" by Marvel comics has the first appearance of Bart Simpson in comic books BUT Matt groening is not an artist listed for that book. djangofan (talk) 02:52, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
Full name
[edit]Can a reference be found for Groening's full name? I can't seem to find a reliable source for "Matthew Abram Groening". Strugglehouse (talk) 22:31, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
