Note
[edit]--Can somebody change flag on B&H Airlines because its suppose to be Bosnia and Herzegovina, not Bulgaria.
--It is funny how someone called me after reading this article and asked about Turkish Airlines. He never before heard about it and was worried after reading the hijack news. Anyway, for those of you who may have a similar concern: it is an isolated incident which can happen to any flight. As a matter of fact, having flied with almost all US companies, Air France, KLM and Turkish Airlines many many times, my favorite used to be Turkish Airlines. They were one of the top companies in terms of in-flight service before 2003. The changes in top management had negative effects after 2003, nowadays (2006) it is roughly comparable to Delta domestic flights in terms of quality.
--Why does this article make Turkish Airlines sound like a company with nothing but a history of disasters? I believe that Turkish Airlines has much more to offer than just hijackings and crashes. Can someone elaborate more on its history and achievements, rather than just focus on the negative aspects?
So much for 'neutral point of view'. Heh.
--I agree with the opinion above. Turkish Airlines is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world and also is one of the most reliable ones. For more information about the flight network and fleet, take a visit to company's webpage www.thy.com Regards. [MTABALU]
I'm sorry, but these are just verifyable facts. If you know more about this airline's history and achievements please feel free to add to the article (preferably with references). Tinus 21:28, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, but this is a ridiculous comment from Tinus, in Europe Air France has more incidents than Turkish Airlines. Air France has 11 crashes. Turkish Airlines has almost an equal amount of incidents as Lufthansa, 6 accidents vs. 5 accidents. And worldwide American Airlines has the most crashes with 11 crashes. Sharing a first place together with Air France. On top of that American Airlines also has the most fatalities with 858 fatalities in the world. Number two is China Airlines with 760 fatalities. And the deadliest airplane crash in the world is by Dutch KLM which happened in 1977 on Tenerife, Spain, killing in total 583 people. Which happened due to stubbornness of the Dutch pilot. So, no you can't falsely claim that these are "just verifiable facts" and push a bigoted narrative, deliberately purely focusing on the negative. This is anything but a neutral point of view. What Airline Has Had the Most Crashes? (US, Worldwide, Europe)
Callsign
[edit]The callsign for Turkish Airlines is Turkish. It is NOT Turkair. I have confirmed this with a number of Turkish ATC's and pilots. Please stop reverting the article.
- No, the callsign used by many controllers is Turkish because thats what they're used to (old callsign is Turkish). Official callsign is "Turkair" but mostly no-one uses Turkair in Turkey or sometimes Germany. Tekin 09:50, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:TurkishAirlineslogo.PNG
[edit]Image:TurkishAirlineslogo.PNG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Inflight magazine
[edit]I haven't worked at all on airline articles, so I don't know if there is a standard way to handle this, but presumably somewhere the article should mention their inflight magazine Skylife - Şubat, which is a rather good one. Destinations
[edit]- What is your source for the list of future destinations? I agree with the list as it seems quite probable except for Nalchik (a rarely used airport) and for Sukhumi (Abkhazia -- independence not internationally recognized -- and unlikely that a NATO member country would have direct service there). Why was Kabul removed? I believe Mineralnye Vody and Vladikavkaz are more likely than Nalchik. The March issue of the TK in-flight magazine does not list Novosibirsk as a planned 2010 destination. I believe Islamabad is also planned to begin soon. Debona.michel (talk) 10:12, 15 March 2010 (UTC) Debona.michel (talk) 10:33, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
Sponsorhips
[edit]{{editsemiprotected}}
THY is the sponsors of Barcelona and Man.United. Okay. But who added Fenerbahçe there? It so meaningless because THY is the sponsor of the biggest 3 football clubs in Turkey. Not only Fenerbahçe but also Beşiktaş and Galatasary too. (You can check it from the official websites of the clubs. www.bjk.com.tr and www.galatasaray.org at the bottom of the website where sponsors listed)
So you can either remove Fenerbahçe from there or you should add Beşiktaş and Galatasaray there too. But i would suggest you to remove Fenerbahçe from the article because it is not significant considered with Barcelona and Man.United. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.54.18.205 (talk) 14:58, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

My edit
[edit]Some editor wrote into the end of the incidents section, a claim about Turkish Airlines having a high incident rate, One that surpassed African Airlines(never heard of that carrier. I guess they mean all the individual airlines on that continent) and that over 800 people had died while flying the airline over the last 25 years.
The last part is dead wrong. Less than 200 people have died while flying Turkish Airlines since 1981. That's less than Pan Am, American Airlines, United Airlines, Kenya Airways, Korean Air Lines, etc etc.
As for the incident rate, it might be high. But the website linked to for this claim made no comparisons for Turkish Airlines except against other European carriers. So it was incomplete. I edited these comments out entirely.William 23:47, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Incidents
[edit]I prepared a standard table for incidents. Any help appreciated to complete the table Yakamoz51 (talk) 22:23, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Flight | Date | Aircraft | Location | Description | Casualties | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Fatal | Serious | Minor | Uninjured | Ground | |||||
N/A[1] | 17 February 1959 | Vickers Viscount Type 793 | London Gatwick Airport | A Vickers Viscount Type 793 crashed in heavy fog just before landing at London Gatwick Airport. The charter flight was carrying Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and a governmental delegation to London for signing the Zürich and London Agreements on the Cyprus issue. Menderes was among the ten survivors of 8 crew and 16 passengers on board. This was the airline's first accident. | 14 | 10 |
Not sure it really needs a table and as the accident and incident section is so large it may be better to split it out into an article Turkish Airlines accidents and incidents and keep it as prose. Sometimes tables make it harder for readers to understand if they get big and unwieldy with lots of text. MilborneOne (talk) 23:06, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
- I second that. A table does not bring any additional value in this case. --R.Schuster (talk) 11:19, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Kathmandu incident
[edit]Please stop adding the Kathmandu incident. The event is not notable per WP:AIRCRASH guidelines and Wikipedia is not a newspaper.--Jetstreamer Talk 22:00, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
- Some discussion on this topic took place here. Having known Jetstreamer's stand now, I find that to be reasonable. We can wait for further news on whether the aircraft could be repaired and flown off, or written off at the airport which will determine whether this incident is notable for inclusion. - Mailer Diablo 00:25, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Jetstreamer: - Sorry, I hadn't seen this discussion before I made the addition. From what I can gather, the a/c was severely damaged, with specialist recovery equipment having to be flown in by the Indian Air Force. The fact that more than one editor has added the accident would seem to show that there is consensus for a mention. Whether or not it merits an article is a different matter. Probably not, but let's see what comes out in due course. See also talk:Airbus A330. Mjroots (talk) 19:07, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Bombing of Daallo Airlines Flight
[edit]Hi everyone. A Turkish Airlines flight was the intended target of a suspected suicide bombing that ended up affecting Daallo Airlines Flight 159 after a TK flight was cancelled. My edits to this article to this effect were deemed not notable and reverted because "cancellations occur all the time". I would disagree, it does seem notable to me as al-Shabaab stated that they targeted Turkish Airlines because they are the flag carrier of a NATO state and to target intelligence officials and NATO soldiers. I am corerect in thinking this would mean it is notable and this information deserves a place in the accidents & incidents section of this article? Thanks! Lounge renaming
[edit]My edit for the renamed lounge has been reverted claiming it is "unsupported by source given". That's just sloppy reading of the source given. Skylife is the official magazine of Turkish Airlines and the source cited was signed by M. İlker Aycı, the Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee. Remove wet-leased aircraft from fleet list?
[edit]The fleet list in the article includes wet-leased aircraft (of which there are about 90), which according to WP:AIRLINE-FLEET-LIST it shouldn't. This is because the main source (the fleet list on THY's web site) is essentially a PR document and includes all aircraft, also the wet-leased ones. You can see more detailed information from Turkish Airlines' board reports, like here, which has a which aircraft are owned and which are leased under which conditions. Turkish Airlines owns about ~10% of its fleet, another ~65% are dry-leased, the remaining ~25% are wet-leased. I recently made an edit to make it clearer, but it was removed by Jetstreamer. I propose either at least marking the wet-leased aircraft in the fleet list, or removing them altogether from the fleet list as per WP:AIRLINE-FLEET-LIST, but this will lead to lots of edits by other users later who look at THY's web site and haven't understood wet leases. - Toothswung (talk) 03:31, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
- Fleets not fully owned is a characteristic of most airlines. I don't see why the Turkish Airlines article should mention this. Again, this is not a fansite. Nobody cares if the fleet is owned or leased.--Jetstreamer Talk 14:05, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
- You're correct. So should we follow WP:AIRLINE-FLEET-LIST in removing the wet-leased aircraft or not? - Toothswung (talk) 15:05, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
- I'd say yes, but WP:AIRLINE-FLEET-LIST is somewhat contradictory. On the one hand it says to include all the aircraft flown by an airline. On the other hand it says not to include wet-leased aircraft. In any case, it does not say to fully disclose the owners of wet-leased aicraft. But you raise a good point and we can start a discussion at WT:AIRLINE over a clarification of this.--Jetstreamer Talk 15:19, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
- You need to take care about definitions the report says that 80 odd are on operating/wet leases so I suspect that very few are actually wet leased, that is operated on behalf of THY by somebody else and most are on operating leases which probably not relevant to the article. MilborneOne (talk) 15:46, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
- You're correct. That said, from the list it would seem that there are at least 27 that are actually wet leased (three cargo aircraft, one of which recently crashed, and the 24 B737-800 listed under "WL"). I think it still makes sense to raise the point. - Toothswung (talk) 15:57, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

Proposed merge with Turkish Airlines fleet
[edit]A Table and 2 paragraphs won't need a new page, do they? Daiyusha (talk) 05:18, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Daiyusha: Actually, no comments are necessary. You may revert to the original version whenever you want. Styyx (talk · contribs) should have discussed the split here before proceeding.--Jetstreamer Talk 16:29, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose - I dont see anything wrong with a separate fleet article, and if it as it should cover the history and development of the fleet it may then be to big to merge back in. MilborneOne (talk) 17:01, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
- Ideally, but I don't think that is the case here. The user who split the fleet table into a stand alone article simply copied the information from the parent.--Jetstreamer Talk 20:51, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
New Chairman of the Board
[edit]Hello, someone should form the article for the new Chairman of the Board, Dr. Ahmet Bolat. Thank you, 46.31.118.93 (talk) 11:20, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
- Source?--Jetstreamer Talk 12:46, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
- Jetstreamer I think the IP suggests that we create an article for the person itself. Regarding the source about the change, the article was updated by me two months ago with sourcing. ~StyyxTalk? 16:58, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification, I think you're right about it.--Jetstreamer Talk 17:12, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes to official name
[edit]@El C: Hello there. Sources for the recent changes were added by an IP in this [4] edit. All prior changes were unsourced. That was what I referred to in WP:RPP. Jetstreamer Talk 11:39, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- So are we good @Jetstreamer? El_C 15:23, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- @El C: Yes, we are.--Jetstreamer Talk 22:56, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, but next time, Jetstreamer, when someone adds a citation in the edit summary, you should not be reverting that edit because it wasn't added inline. That's a bit subpar, I'm sorry to say. If the citation is sound, just attach it to the given text yourself, which even as a bare url only involves copying the link/s inside <ref></ref> tags. Thanks. El_C 09:06, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Ankara & Izmir hubs
[edit]Saw the back and forth between @Lifetimelucid & @Jetstreamer regarding this.
I've done a bit of searching and I'm not seeing any evidence that these hubs exist. While Wikipedia isn't a reliable source, looking at our article for İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport, I'm seeing only Istanbul as a year-round destination for Turkish Airlines with five seasonal services (all unsourced but presumably the pilgrimage flights are valid)). Looking at flight connections, I'm only seeing one routes by Turkish from Izmir (Ordu and SAW are AnadoluJet and the Belgrade is codeshare from Air Serbia). Similarly, Ankara Esenboğa Airport shows only Istanbul + seasonal flights to pilgrimage destinations. Searching for articles referring to these hubs also turn up nothing.
Given this, it seems these hubs don't exist so I'm not sure how they got into the article. I'm going to go ahead and remove them. Avgeekamfot (talk) 20:23, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- I see, my possible guess as to why it was a thing on the article was because the information likely came from a source i'm unfamiliar of, or from planespotters (not allowed on wikipedia as a source) because the site mentioned those as hubs too, I appreciate the contribution! Lifetimelucid (talk) 23:11, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Lifetimelucid, Jetstreamer, and Avgeekamfot: It was mentioned in here, here, here, and here. Perhaps one of those are reason on why it was included in the first place. Ckfasdf (talk) 11:10, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- Huh that's super strange, CAPA is usually as reliable as it gets in terms of aviation. Maybe they fill in their profiles from a less reliable source? Great catch though! Avgeekamfot (talk) 17:24, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
- One thing I want to ask is that İzmir's Adnan Menderes airport page says that it is a focus city for Turkish Airlines. Should the page for Turkish Airlines include a focus city for İzmir or should the focus city mention be removed on that page? Lifetimelucid (talk) 13:32, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Antalya Airport hub
[edit]Antalya's Airport page lists Turkish Airlines as having a hub there, though there's only 1 scheduled flight from Antalya with Turkish that doesn't go to its hub back in Istanbul, Moscow-Vnukovo, there are also 13 seasonal destinations that fly out of Antalya with Turkish.
Should the page include a secondary hub / focus city for Antalya, or should it be unchanged? Lifetimelucid (talk) 20:59, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
