Today's TFA, Felix M. Warburg House, was written by Vami_IV and Epicgenius, introduced: "This article is about another of the great houses that once lined Fifth Avenue in New York. Specifically, this is the mansion of Felix M. Warburg, a Jewish financier who ignored fears of anti-Semitic reprisal to his decided to build himself a big Gothic manor in the middle of New York City. Although the Warburgs no longer remain, their legacy does: the museum is now the home of the Jewish Museum (Manhattan) and the building largely survives as they left it. It's a beautiful building and I hope you will all enjoy it."! - in memory --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:16, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

Intervention request by an Administrator, please

[edit]

Hi, @Kusma . I'm contacting you after visiting [1] and [2]. I'm having a problem with users @TylerBurden (abusing his Wikipedia rights) and @Borgenland, who are deleting my editions in the conflictive page Timeline of the Russian invasion of Ukraine (1 December 2023 – present). Specifically, they're deleting a properly sourced edition by me, with a highly relevant deposition by NATO's supreme commander on April 10, here and here. Then, @Tylerburden also came to my talk page to try and intimidate me, and has also erased the content in the main page about the war Russian invasion of Ukraine, here. Sorry for bothering you, but I'd need help to learn how to proceed. Best regards, MaeseLeon (talk) 18:37, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I had explained to them in my edit summary as to why and have made a more detailed explanation in their talk page, but instead complainant above has made wild accusations and bad faith assumptions. Borgenland (talk) 18:57, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This does not appear to be an admin matter at this point. Not everything that is sourced must be included. If you wish to explain why you think the content should be included, the best place is on the relevant talk page. —Kusma (talk) 19:25, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to wait to bestow this upon you until after the GA review was complete, but you once again pulling through with a knotty paragraph, coupled with me having added your idea to the History section and it looking particularly snazzy makes me pull the WikiLove trigger now. I know I've said it a lot, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for caring, helping me write the very best version of an article I care a lot about, and being nothing but a role model for my improvement as an editor. I use this as a guide. You are correct that our instructions are contradictory and unclear. Nikki said to discuss it on the page but my experience is policy discussions rarely go anywhere on WP. Hope all is well with you and that this helps. SusunW (talk) 17:48, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, this looks much better than our guide. I guess what we need is someone who rewrites our guide, not a long discussion on what colour the bikeshed should be. —Kusma (talk) 18:57, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My thoughts exactly. If someone starts a discussion over there, I'll put in an appearance, but not likely to stick around if it is beating a dead horse. We really should fix the guide, but my experiences tell me it isn't likely. SusunW (talk) 22:44, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a link to your guide and started a discussion section at that page, but as I am not volunteering to do the rewrite (having no real clue about accessibility, I can offer only goodwill, not expertise) this may lead to nothing. —Kusma (talk) 09:07, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Greeting from Gother.com

[edit]

Hi Kusma,

I'm Sun from Gother.com, we are the online travel agency platform which operates in Thailand for a few years, and also we are partner with the large financial institutions in Thailand, you can get more detail about me from these news https://www.phocuswire.com/thailand-ota-traveligo-gets-25m-rebrands-to-gother and https://skift.com/2023/11/03/gother-raises-25-million-for-asian-online-travel-agency-startup-funding-roundup/. By the way, could you please let me know how can I revise the page to be passed the review before I submitted again. Saranonk (talk) 10:08, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Saranonk, please do not write about your own company. If you do, you need to follow everything said at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest; Wikipedia is not a platform for advertising or promotion. —Kusma (talk) 10:51, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kusma I understand your point, however let me clarify my intention a bit. My intention is not to advertise the company(I already advertise it in other platforms) but to give the information like who are we and what do we do, to people who is interested in the company, it's the same case as Traveloka or Agoda do. I'm very new for the Wikipedia so I would very appreciate if you suggest me how to revise content to be acceptable as the policy. Saranonk (talk) 04:47, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Statements like "The heart of Gother's branding is encapsulated in the concept Open-Ended Destination with Gother, the platform where travel means more than just destinations" are clearly advertising (and empty phrases). As at Agoda, a Wikipedia article is written using reliable, independent secondary sources (which must include any important negative content as per WP:NPOV). To qualify for an article, the sourcing must be good enough to pass the notability guidelines. —Kusma (talk) 10:37, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

—Kusma (talk) 21:24, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for another good one! - Libuše Domanínská would have turned 100 today, but I missed that ;) - Overnight, Tamara Milashkina became GA. --

Thank you! - Pictured on the Main page: Brian's Mozart family grand tour, my story today, and Mozart related to all three items of music on my talk: our 2023 concert, an opera in a theatre where a Mozart premiere took place, and those remembered, Martti Wallén, a bass, and Liana Isakadze, a violinist from Georgia, (whose article would be better with more details about her music-making). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:27, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know we had an article on the Grand Tour! I wrote about the Mozarts' visit to the British Museum at Andrew Planta a while ago. —Kusma (talk) 11:22, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting! - My story today is - because of the anniversary of the premiere OTD in 1782 - about Die Entführung aus dem Serail, opera by Mozart, while yesterday's was - because of the TFA - about Les contes d'Hoffmann, opera by Offenbach, - so 3 times Mozart again if you click on "music" ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:04, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Today's story is about a photographer who took iconic pictures, especially View from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Manhattan, 9/11, yesterday's was a great mezzo, and on Thursday we watched a sublime ballerina. There's the risk that someone might decide that this one example wasn't that big of a mess, so they can probably get away with not notifying people/groups expected to object (this is exactly when it will blow up in their faces), or that they'll find counterexamples, in which things were done poorly and didn't become a big mess after all (probably because the proposal was so sensible or so unimportant that nobody would have objected even if they had been notified. What ultimately matters is that the proposal works for people, not that you squeaked it through an official process), and so talk themselves into making the wrong choice for a less obviously acceptable proposal. I think it is better to let them see the principle.
Also, shorter messages are more likely to get read, which is another reason not to add a list of examples. WhatamIdoing (talk) 07:34, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice. My original reason for not making a list was laziness. Now I am going to pretend it was wisdom :) —Kusma (talk) 08:16, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Why you removed speedy deletion tag? I was wrong probably and violated AfD policy sorry Indiana's Football (talk) 09:10, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the speedy tag because it was visible on the main AfD log for the day, making it look as if it was up for speedy deletion. Other people edited the page, so I decided to close the AFD as withdrawn instead of deleting the AFD page. —Kusma (talk) 09:11, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rimini Protokoll

[edit]

Hi, I realized on the main page that you are very actively writing high quality articles on German persons of interest. I am not so experienced in the en.wikipedia.org, but edited a lot some time ago on de.wikipedia.org. Can you tell me if there are basic differences in the way people choose or cite sources here? I am somewhat confused as my extension of the article Rimini Protokoll is constantly reverted, even if I gave a host of sources for almost every single sentence. I would be really grateful, if you could have a glance [on my revision] of the article. I also wrote this article about Pierre Charbonnier, without getting into such trouble.--Olag (talk) Olag (talk) 15:44, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kahler not a topologist?

[edit]

Hello. A few months ago you recently removed my entry to put Erich Kahler as a topologist in a teaching position when Hitler came to power. I concede it was not in the source given, and as such did not belong there. However, Kahler invented his namesake manifold, and manifolds are a major topic of topology. In addition, he was involved in differential geometry, which is closely related to topology. I am no longer interested in modifying the article in question but what is your reasoning for declaring him as not a topologist? I am genuinely curious. Thank you. MaribelGame (talk) 18:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MaribelGame, my main reason for removing Kähler was that he was not mentioned in the source cited. In my view, Kähler is not a topologist, but a mathematical physicist and differential geometer, so does not belong in the list (not every geometer is a topologist even if the subjects are related). At least not without additional reliable sources. —Kusma (talk) 19:05, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With regards to the Adolf Uunona Page

[edit]

Can I get some kind of understanding on what it takes for a page to be deleted? I’d like to know why a page about a philanthropist (albeit with a historically similar name) was deleted multiple times. I’m not exactly new to Wikipedia, but I’m fairly new to editing so I don’t get things like policies. Cornishrom20 (talk) 09:55, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There was no substantial change from the version of the article deleted in 2021, with the reasoning elaborated at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Adolf Uunona. More substantial coverage of the person in reliable sources to prove notability could lead to a different outcome. —Kusma (talk) 10:38, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I wonder if you could help User:Tim riley, User:KJP1 and me to nominate François-Louis Auvity for DYK? This French bishop was a powerful collaborator with the Nazis in France during the occupation of France during WWII, proliferating writings to Catholics encouraging collaboration and the Nazis' actions against Jews, communists, etc.

The article is older than one week, but I hope there is an exception here, because the editor who created the article on 16 September, User:Mémoiredumaquis, died on 27 September. He had created a Peer Review page for it on 18 September. When User:Tim riley discovered, a few days ago, that Mémoiredumaquis had died, he did further research to improve the article and asked KJP and me to review and improve it, which we did. The late Mémoiredumaquis hoped that this bishop's deeds would be more widely seen by modern readers, and I agree that this is a very interesting and telling subject, especially to anyone wondering what the Catholic Church was up to during this period in France.

None of us is familiar with the DYK nomination process, and we wonder if you could nominate the item for us? Any help would be much appreciated. Perhaps the hook could be:

Thanks for any help or advice! -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:06, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Ssilvers/@Tim riley/@KJP1, that's a noble cause and a very interesting article, I had no idea that French collaboration with my deplorable countrymen of 80 years ago extended to senior clergy. From a DYK process point of view: while I can try to ask for an exemption from the newness rule (which could be successful, or not), I would need to be absolutely certain of the sourcing for the hook facts (and sourcing for these facts needs to be provided at nomination time; either with links to an online source or with quotes from an offline source). Generally in the article there are various primary sources and some offline sources that are identical to those of the French version; I would like at least some assurance that these have been checked and ideally that someone can provide additional context if necessary. The Legeard source that is widely used is a WP:SPS that needs additional consideration and is probably not going to fly as sourcing for a Main Page hook.
An alternative to nominating now and asking for an exemption to the rules would be to first polish the article up to WP:GA status and then to nominate within a week of promotion to GA. I am happy to help with nominating once I am convinced with the sourcing. —Kusma (talk) 09:50, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Kusma, thank you so much for looking into this. Auvity certainly published his hateful writings to influence his French faithful and other French, but those are primary sources. If Legeard will not fly at DYK, then it seems like your Plan B is probably the best option. I don't know if you have any interest in this, but you may want to put up stubs for Auvity and the similarly odious Florent du Bois de La Villerabel on German Wikipedia. My own French and German are next to nil, though I like to sing German and French Lieder. -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:17, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
