Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Chan Han Xiang

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Final (1/9/2), withdrawn 03:02, Dec 27, 2004

I have been here since 5 September 2004, and at the time of my writing, I have 2468 edits. [1]. I have written and totally re-written 93 articles, User:Chan Han Xiang/Works and even loaded several images, most of them can be found in the List of Koreans in the articles at the celebrities section. I am also #587 out of the top 1000 editors in the Main namespace edits. I did ask sysop acess once, but I was rejected due to the very lack of experience. I did had wars with Gtabary, but we soon understood our mistakes and misunderstandings and fogave each other. Whether you like me or not, or become an admin or not, I will still try my best to make wikipedia into an Encyclopedia a condusive enviroment for reference and study and try my best to help my fellow wikipedians who are in need. 17:11, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Support

  1. Support. 172 09:16, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Some of the comments below are unnecessary mud. These difficulties with other users all appear to be the result of misunderstandings that are quite forgivable given the fact that English is not his first language. 172 05:13, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Oppose

  1. Oppose. He does not seem to understand how the deletion process works (see WP:VFD/Winter Sonata and recent history for Winter Sonata and Winter Sonata (drama)) or what vandalism is (see his talk page). I'm also disturbed at his stridency on a subject he clearly doesn't understand at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles) (note that many of his comments there are unsigned). —Korath会話 09:57, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • The deletion of Winter Sonata (drama) is due to the fact that there is no other topics notable with the same name. Gtabary, on the other hand, misunderstood that there is no need for consistency as other similar topics never had the concept of this consistensiness. Kortah, I urge you to delete of the Winter Sonata (drama) duplicate for me, as it is found in Winter Sonata. Thank You.
    • I oppose to your statement that I do not understand the Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles). I did, and that was just my suggestion to put up the name of tables as I suggested that it was messy. I also suggested the Kana system as I suggested that Japanese who do not know the modern Romaji pronouncation but only know the Kana pronouncation andd putting it up I thought that it would prove to be convenient for a special group of people. However, since all of you thought that it is just all a sheer waste of space, I had no hoice but to oblidge to the idea that the majorty share and me, being a concerned wikipedian, only just debated fiercely about the topic but there's nothing that I do not understand the Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles). Thank You.
    • Well, I blanked out the page because I understand the deletion process. I did not don't understand. According to the page history, which has just converted to a redirected by someone, it has reached the 5th day and I'm abiding by the law. 22nd, the first day, and today is the fifth day. When you reached the fifth day, you may delete off the page. I blanked out but was unable to delete the page because I do not have someone else to help me out. On the other hand, if I put up a redirect, Gtabary would oppose to it. So, I had no choice, and my last alternative was to blank it out myself, hoping that another sysop may help me delete it. Furthermore, 75% of the people agree to delete off the duplicate as the Winter Sonata is enough. It also has just reached the dateline. Am I wrong?

  2. Oppose. Maybe after he has a better understanding of GFDL requirements (move vs. cut/paste to retain history), the definition of vandalism, etc. I'm sure he's well intentioned, but he is currently insufficiently knowledgeable about the administrative side of things for me to support. SWAdair | Talk 11:00, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • Thank you, dair, I will try my best to improve my performance. But, how do you find me unfavourable? Please comment further so that I can enhance my performance on wikipedia. Thanks, User:Chan Han Xiang
      • That is an admirable response. Let me try to explain. The way you attempted to correct the Winter Sonata situation would have violated the GFDL, destroying author attribution and making it look like you alone had written the article. I know that wasn't your intention, but the fact that you weren't aware of it raises a red flag. Also, Wikipedia:Vandalism defines what is and is not vandalism. The dispute you listed at WP:VIP wasn't vandalism. The administrative side of Wikipedia is often dull and hideously repetitive. It is important that anyone being considered for adminship have at least a good working knowledge of the GFDL and current policies. Reading a bunch of policy pages may seem pretty dull, but it is important so that you know how to act in a way that will satisfy those rules and regulations. SWAdair | Talk 03:54, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
        • After reviewing the history of Winter Sonata, I had no choice but to cut and paste. Yes, I fully understand that this is violating the GFDL, but moving wintersonata with the drama suffix is impossible as Winter sonata is not an empty page. (Please try it out on the sandbox) and see if you can do;, moving a page to another occupied page is impossible. Furthermore, the content is the same, but I have to eliminate one the duplicate and shift the content to its rightful place.Chan Han XiangUser:Chan Han Xiang
        • The way to preserve the history is to first delete the unneeded redirect page. That makes it possible to move the other page to the proper location, bringing along the article history. In fact, that is what was eventually done. I'm not saying you have to know everything about everything before I would support. There are still some complicated things I won't even attempt because I'm afraid I would mess them up. I would, however, like to see you become more familiar with some of the basic how-to's that most admins are likely to end up using. SWAdair | Talk 06:39, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  3. Oppose strongly. Chan Han Xiang has developed a pattern of insulting other users as well as threatening them. Just one sentence from User talk:Gtabary: I tell you, dog, do a proper article on Johor Jaya, since you act those things as a barrier for comment or you'll be blocked.. Even after being advised about the inappropriateness of it, he's used WP:VIP to list other another editor with whom he is having an editing disagreement. He has changed other editors' signed comments (see [2]). He has created spurious entries on WP:VfD out of spite. He still hasn't figured out how to use "show preview" or ~~~~. I don't get any sense that he understands how the social structure here is supposed to work. He threatened me ("DO NOT UTTER RUBBISH. I DEMAND YOU TO RESTORE THE VFD OR I BLOCK YOU.") when one of his spurious VfD entries had simply expired with a consensus to keep. I do appreciate how hard he's been working, but he needs to learn better how to get along with others here. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 16:46, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • Equally insulting words like noise and mess were used upon me by Gtabary, and he used a lot of abusive comments upon me upon the deletion of Johor Jaya. This is why I had to use them to tell him off. It is not my true intention, but the way he treated me cannot go on for too long. Because of this, something has to be used to stop him, by hook or by crook. I am sorry how I insulted him, but I doubt his good intention towards me. Furthermore, the material that was written on Johor Jaya was not mine, but his. He used it just as a comparison but neither did he restore or did a proper article for Johor Jaya. More than once, he did vandalised my user page, probably by purpose. After holding back my temper after so much of his indirect insults, I suggested that legal actions should be taken against him. Gordon, I hope you may seriously reconsider your vote for this vital point. Thank you. Chan Han Xiang
  4. Oppose. Maybe another time. Andre (talk) 20:59, Dec 26, 2004 (UTC)
  5. A very hard worker, but I think his attitude towards other users is seriously lacking for a potential sysop. Rje 02:36, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  6. Oppose very strongly. User reverted my edit to this page, and does not understand Wikipedia policies. --Ben Brockert 04:51, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC)
    • Very sorry. Maybe I was replying the questions and this in turn, accidentally reverted your comments. I hope you forgive me for this. Please tell me where I have reverted and I will revert them for you.User:Chan Han Xiang
      • I reinserted my comments as soon as I noticed. To revert the page you either had to do it intentionally or ignore the edit conflict dialogue, neither actions I'd want in an admin. --Ben Brockert < 01:38, Dec 28, 2004 (UTC)
  7. Oppose for now. Let me make it clear that I appreciate his work that I've seen (especially on the List of multiracial people as being high-quality), but I am disturbed by a number of things:
    • I would like to be assured that his extreme and open antagonism to Christianity won't influence his edits unduly. A simple promise will do - I'll accept it. I haven't seen any evidence of his POV in his edits, but I would like to hear a promise that it never will.
    • Of more serious import, on the same edit, he threatens to block users who "vandalize" (i.e., dare to edit) his user page. Reading the comments on this page, I see that he has directly threatened several people. Of course, he was bluffing - he doesn't have the power to block users - and until he demonstrates better judgement, I'm not going to vote to give him that power.
    • I see he's been here only three months. That in itself is no problem - I have voted before for people who have been here for three months, and will probably do so again, but when there are factors counting against a user, the shortness of tenure certainly doesn't count in his favour.
    • If you can assure me about the first point (that your anti-Christian POV will not show up in your edits), reform your behaviour on the second point (stop threatening to block users who rub you up the wrong way), and wait another three months, I will probably end up voting for you then. Not this time. David Cannon 07:12, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  8. What David Cannon said. Johnleemk | Talk 07:44, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  9. Oppose for now. Not only do I second David Cannon's comments here, but the intent to delete 'substubs' has me worried. I see substubs as potentially good articles, not 'speedy' material. |Anárion|(Pedo!) 07:59, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Neutral

  1. I haven't seen a great deal of incivility in my dealings with this user, but he does seem to be a bit unfamilar with the way things work around here, including in some important areas such as copyright and NPOV. Ambi 03:03, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Comments

  • This is so typical of Wikipedia. One user starts digging up dirt and, in typical groupthink fashion, everyone starts following suit. All these mistakes being brought up are innocuous; they are likely the result of some misunderstandings likely because English is not his first language. He is reasonably active enough and familiar enough with process to be an administrator. (If he makes a mistake, there is no mistake on the part of an admin that cannot be undone. The job isn't significant enough for this not to be the case.) BTW, this take on his experience is coming from the most senior user weighing in so far on this self-nom. 172 03:46, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • Deleting images can not be undone; nor can merging histories. And it takes more time to fix mistakes by an editor with administrator privs than one with normal. He also does not explain why he wants to be an administrator. I do agree that one such mistake would be innocuous, but having a number of them (and his responses to them being brought up) makes them not-so-innocuous. --Ben Brockert 03:58, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC)
      • Then please, tell me where is my wrong. I sincerely did not know where is my mistake at all. Furthermore, I have already explained why I wanted to be an admin through the questions, and from my view at the very top by making wikipedia a condusive..... Thanks. User:Chan Han Xiang
      • Perfection is not a requirement for an admin. And images can be re-uploaded. 172 05:13, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
A. There are always quite a few blanked pages in wikipedia. Also, the substubs. In the event that I am either unable to write out or expand that article, I will delete it off. Also, becoming an admin means that I will put in 110% participation in the vfd. I will also by using the RC patrol, on extreme and frequent cases of vandalism, block those users out, and revert the pages back to its original outlook and maybe even enhance it fromthere. Also, on certain occasions, if there is an long and tedious edit war, I will also protect the page and let them war out in the discussion, instead of the article itself as an edit war will make readers very confused as every time he comes, there will always be something different.
  • Substubs aren't always candidates for speedy deletion. Nor are all blanked pages, for that matter. --Ben Brockert 05:03, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC)
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A. Yes, please. Honestly, I'm equally pleased with every article I write. To me, for every article you write, it is jut like doing another composition. I never vandalised an article, nor did I make the content of the article boring, because I want to share my love with wikipedia. To me, coming to wikipedia for me as there is no other encyclopedia better than wikipedia because of its size.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and will deal with it in the future?
A. I'm terribly sorry to say that, but I did came under very heavy stress from User:Gtabary, who used really provocative commnts against me for a very long time. According to Jpggordon, I really want to block him out for one day but I really got retalitated. I don't really know the true itention of Gtabary, but it seems he did not treat me well in the past. I hope that there will not be anymore such hostile cases in the future, but even there is in any the future, I will not block him or warn people in a hostile manner, but advise him against it, but in a polite and firm manner. If condition persists, dispute resolutions and artibation will have to be used. But I hope all these conflicts business, should it land on me or others, I hope that I can put all of them down to make wikipedia a condusive place for study and reference. User:Chan Han Xiang
