Name of this article
[edit]Shouldn't the name of this article be just Rhythm Nation 1814? Allmusic and Rolling Stone list it as such. I am inclined to agree with them; I don't think "Janet Jackson's" is part of the title, merely an indication of the name of the artist. indopug (talk) 17:22, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
- No. Several sources at the time of release indicated the full title of the album is Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, including Rolling Stone if you read the review you mentioned.
Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation (a title that puts ego before social conscience) begins with the distant sound of a tolling bell – a muffled memory of a dream deferred, perhaps (let freedom ring), or the still-faint promise of better things to come (ringing in the new).
— Rolling Stone Oct 19, 1989
Realism is again the theme of a Jackson album, the new "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814," although this time it doesn't concern the bedroom, but instead, the streets. She may be Michael Jackson's younger sister, but she takes an unsparing look at the real world.
— Boston Globe 09-17-1989
The nominees included: . . .But Seriously," Phil Collins; "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814," Janet Jackson; and "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em," M.C. Hammer.
— San Antonio Express-News 12-22-1990
Janet Jackson's sold-out Rhythm Nation tour kicked off in Miami on March 1 and continues this summer in 20,000-seat indoor arenas like the Forum in Los Angeles, Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, N.Y., and the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Her first-ever solo tour may be prototypical of the '90s. An elaborately choreographed spectacle with 17 dancers, musicians, and backup singers, it aims to re-create the visual intensity of the videos from her two multiplatinum albums, 1986's Control and the current Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814.
— Entertainment Weekly 06-01-1990
- A simple google seach also reveal several sources which list the albums full title, including From Brass to Gold - the encyclopedia for the history of A&M records. Other sources, at the time of release and currently shorten the title to Rhythm Nation 1814 for the sake of brevity, but its not an indication of the albums true title. - "Jackson, Jam and Lewis, routinely watched television news reports" - commas make it hard to read.
- Only 2 pro. reviews can be found for the infobox?
- Those were the only two I found online. This is a possible third though im not sure if its notable to be added. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 08:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- The Sputnik review is fine per Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums#Non-professional reviews (as he's staff) You don't have to use online reviews in the infobox; for magazine reviews just state the month and year of the issue (or similar). —Giggy 09:27, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I just read WP:ALBUMS and I added the review to the info box and the reception section. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 09:57, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

- "Originally, executives at A&M wanted Jackson to expand on the ideas presented on Control," - what ideas were they?
- No indication has ever been given. I've read online biographies as well as old news reports found through my college online data base. Even the reports from 1989 don't say anything more than "she sent an A&M exec home and went forward with her own idea. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 08:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- The Control article should have some basic (sourced) information on ideas... at least mention that in general terms so some context is given. —Giggy 09:28, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

- For ref 7, can you just link directly to the Allmusic page?
- Done (now ref 8)The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 10:21, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- "had been a former member of The Time;" - what's that/what relevance does it have?
- The Production section is rather short - was production so smooth that nothing of note happened?
- I have no idea, but i've found no mention of extensive production commentary from any source. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 08:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- You don't need to include the years for the Audio samples (do you?)
- "that schoolyard shooting in Stockton, Calif." - is there a relevant article on that to wlink to?
- I think the Critical section should be in past tense, and you that you should expand it.
- Shouldn't the Release and promotion section go before the Reception one?
- "On 24 April 2007, iTunes added all of Jackson's A&M-era albums to their music library." - ref?
- removed. its just triva. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 09:04, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- Ref 33 shouldn't have the article title in italics.
- that's due to the citation template. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 08:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- "The album earned Jackson eight Billboard Music Awards" - italics for Billboard
- "including older brother Michael Jackson and Madonna." - reads like Madonna is an older brother. Use comma.
- Having the tables side by side makes the formatting a bit awkward... I wouldn't bother; just go one below the other.
- Album title in external links should have italics?
That's the lot - done offline - please leave me a note when done. Cheers —Giggy 07:11, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

An important turning point for black women
[edit]The claim in the article that "The commercial success of Jackson's album became part of an important turning point for black women in the recording industry" is based on a general statement in one source that Janet Jackson along with Tina Turner and Whitney Houston were achieving financial success. The source does not cite the album, and does not appear to credit either Jackson or the album for being part of an important turning point. That claim needs more secure sourcing. If better sourcing cannot be found, then the claim should be removed. SilkTork ✔Tea time 23:44, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
- I would suggest deleting "The commercial success of Jackson's album became part of an important turning point for black women in the recording industry", and moving the quote from the Encyclopedia of Women to the Jackson article where it would fit better. Interludes on vinyl
[edit]It's stated in the article that the interludes before most of the songs were removed in the vinyl version. I don't believe that is true. I own a copy of the US vinyl release and ALL of the interludes are there. They are simply not listed on the labels or backside of the album, but they are indeed there. Is there some sort of vinyl release that omits them?

Edits to be made to article
[edit]Why does this article continue so many negative references - who cares what the negative critics said. It has turned out to be one of the most critically and commercially successful albums of all time.
Moreover. someone should add that it was the #1 end of year album in 1990 in USA in the charts section. such an important fact, yet not included. 101.174.48.224 (talk) 04:32, 9 August 2013 (UTC)FH
Billboard Awards received for the album
[edit]Need to include the fact that Janet won a record number of Billboard awards for this album, the most anyone has received on one occasion. I also believe she holds the title for most Billboard wins (have to find a source)≈101.161.40.207 (talk) 21:30, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

How many millions sold? Let's look at the math
[edit]Recently, we had a discussion at Talk:Janet_Jackson#How many millions sold? Revisiting the math at which we arrived at the conclusion that Janet's sales figures have been artificially inflated by huge amounts. She has not sold so many millions around the world; her core audience is in the United States, which has good record-keeping authority for sales. The RIAA says this album is certified for 6 million units in the US, and all the other certifications around the world do not add up to another million. So we know the album sold perhaps 7 million certified units, and the usual industry inflation is as much as half again, so the figure we are telling the reader should be about 10.5 million, give or take. The media sometimes uses the wildly inflated numbers coming out of Janet's management people, and because of that, the number 12 million is often quoted.[1] But this nonsense cannot continue rising upward indefinitely. The place where we draw the line on ridiculous ego-serving inflation is at 12 million, not the wishful 20 million placed recently in the article. Binksternet (talk) 03:08, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
Note that the article achieved GA status in July 2008 at which point it said "8 million" in sales.[2] Two years later when it failed to make FA status, the article was trying to push a sales figure of 14 million, citing Janet's own public relations hype published in prnewswire.[3] We should never be citing numbers from Janet's people. - I also agree. This is an album that sold less than 1 million (in certifications) outside USA. Early this day I found a kinda of WP:SYNTH with her USA-sales based on certifications+nielsen report+BMG club. I've never saw in other contemporary albums a method like that tbh. I mean a breakdown only in post-Nielsen releases not before. Its only appropiate to have mention it in the commercial performance but not as the "total sales"; hopefully was fixed by Binksternet. --Apoxyomenus (talk) 03:38, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Some of legit 20 million sellers are Whitney, Daydream, and Oops!... I Did It Again, and all of them have diamond status in the US and multi-platinum in many other countries. Based on this receipts, only delusional fanatics would believe that Rhythm Nation came anywhere near to the sales of those albums. Bluesatellite (talk) 04:07, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
