[edit]I'm interested in walking the glacier . i understand you can stay in one of the department huts for little money , Whats the deal, ? Bob Turner ,Boston
- Which glacier? There are some huts available cheap but it depends on many factors. You should contact the department directly to find out more details. The web site is http://www.doc.govt.nz -- FP <talk><edits> 04:36, May 9, 2005 (UTC)

Source tag
[edit]Alan per your request: I placed the tag because the sources are not readily identified (footnotes would be cool), and passages such as, "...was believed to have killed DOC worker Mark Kearney. At the exact time of the eruption, Mr Kearney is thought to have been taking temperature measurements of the lake as part of a programme for monitoring volcanic activity." are a bit less definitive than is typical on Wikipedia. Also, "Many people in New Zealand criticised the government for the department's situation..." offers no sources. How many people, who were they, are there news articles that reference this critiism, etc. I hope you don't take this as me being overly-critical, but the article has promise and I'd just like to see it be improved and properly sourced. Cheers. •Jim62sch• 11:31, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:DOClogo.gif
[edit]Image:DOClogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

ROS
[edit]Info for future edit (maybe??):
- Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) - A classification on the basis of setting, activity and the visitor experience. It ranges from the urban environment to remote wilderness areas of the backcountry. There are seven main ROS classes: Urban, Urban Fringe, Rural, Backcountry Drive-in, Backcountry Walk-in, Remote and Wilderness. ROS classification provides a wide recreation-based context to the management of individual sites. Thus the visitor needs and the characteristics of the setting can together guide what services and facilities are provided.

Cave Creek and the History of DOC
[edit]I've noticed there's a section about the Cave Creek disaster, but I think there's a lot more that could be said about the entire history of DoC leading up to this point and after it. The Raoul Island thing was just an incident and maybe shouldn't be in this article in hindsight. Cave Creek, on the other hand, wasn't just an incident---it was a very major turning point in DoC's history. Prior to 1995, DoC had a tiny head office and its regions and conservancies were largely autonomous and often understaffed. DoC didn't have any serious central coordination, or really know where its money was being spent, so even if the government had wanted to spend money on DoC (which it didn't), it would've been hard for DoC to make a good case for it. After Cave Creek and the investigation, things changed a lot. I might try to contribute to Wikipedia when I have time, but if anyone wants to have a go then it needs doing. Mammal eradication programs and efforts
[edit]Oddly, the article does not seem to mention the rather massive mammal eradication programs and efforts undertaken by the Department of Conservation. There is a very good long-form magazine article on the subject here: The Big Kill, New Yorker, December 2014. And here is the wikicode for a citation: <ref name=tny20141223>
{{cite news |last1=Kolbert|first1=Elizabeth |title=The Big Kill : New Zealand's crusade to rid itself of mammals |url=http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/12/22/big-kill |accessdate=23 December 2014 |work=The New Yorker |date=23 December 2014 }}</ref>
